A better way to Kiama?

WERNER STEYER IBUG*

20 January 2010

Since the opening of the Kiama Coastal Walking Track form Loves Bay to Weeri Beach south of Kiama there have been rumours that the track was an attractive alternative to cycling along the Princes Highway with its heavy traffic and poor road shoulders between Kiama and Gerringong.

So just before Christmas I found time to have a look for myself, catching the train to Gerringong. After a short ride through back streets, I found the beginning of the path with a sign that prohibited motor vehicles and horses form using the path but not cyclists.

The 6 km track to Loves Bay is a hilly unformed track providing extensive views of the rugged coast with a number of short steep hills, a walk to cross the beach at the south end and two pebbly beach crossings requiring people to walk their bikes.

While not suited to road bikes with skinny tyres, it is an excellent way to avoid the horrid stretch on the highway and with the addition of the backstreet and shared use path to connect to Kiama it provides a good day out for a ride with a difference.
